This month we will be talking about responsibility, and each student is asked to bring in a list of the things for which he or she is responsible at home. Special emphasis is being placed on the idea that, "you do what you say you will do" when you accept responsibility for something. Therefore, you are careful to understand what is expected before agreeing to take on a responsibility.
The second part of the discussion will be on the responsibilities of the three branches of the US Government - Executive, Legislative and Judicial.
We also have a little puzzle, which is found on the class website at www.mitchellwebs.com/missdawson.htm. When you arrive at the site, click "Character Traits", and then "Responsibility"
While on the site, you might like to see some of the "Photo Trips" that I post to share some of our travels with the class. I try to combine the Columbus day trips with some of the out of state trips, so that there is something for everyone.

Our First Session - Respect
What a treat it was for me to meet all of the kids in Miss. Dawson's class for the first time. They had a little puzzle to solve, and they correctly identified "The Wilds" as the place where I took the wild animal pictures. This is a great place for a day trip for families, and you can find out more about it at http://www.thewilds.org/.
The prize was a small personal notebook and a "magic" pencil for each member of the class. But..... we cannot divulge the secret powers the pencil has. It's a secret for the class!
We discussed Respect for Self, Respect for Others, and Respect for the flag of the United States of America. We covered a lot of ground during the 45-minute class, including a brief history of the universe, the age of exploration, the 40,000,000 American Indians who preceded the settlers from Europe, Ponce de Leon, Jamestown, the Pilgrims, and the several wars fought by the United Stages from the Revolution to the present day. All of the above in the context of the word for the month - Respect.
Next month's word is Responsibility, and we have asked the class to identify the things for which they are responsible at home. In the meantime, I encourage any of the students or any of the parents of the students to add comments to this blog. Hopefully, we can expand the dialog on the citizenship and character traits discussed each month.
